Megan here. Welcome to our new website. We've tried to make it a little reflection of us: practical, unfussy, and pleasant to look at (and modest, have we mentioned we're modest?). I'll be the voice you'll most often 'hear' on our blog and social media, although Erik likes to pop in on Facebook to brag about his office views and how well the herd is doing. Now, I haven't set up any sort of schedule for blog posts, but I will be sure to keep you up to date on what's happening on the farm.
So, lets talk about us!
I'm a transplant to Pictou County, moving here when I married Erik in 2013. I studied plant science in Truro, at the former Nova Scotia Agricultural College, and eventually graduated with an MSc in Agriculture. I often say that you can learn about farming from a book, but you can't learn farming from any amount of reading. Needless to say, marrying into a farming family is a whole other level of education. Clearly, I wouldn't trade it for anything, but I still haven't adjusted to having dinner at a different time every day. I was searching for a project on the farm that I could make my own, and add to the legacy of a multi-generational farm, when I hit upon the idea of a flower farm. I spent the winter of 2015 obsessively researching and embarked on the first flower season in 2016. When I'm not at my full-time job, you can often find me buried in the flower patch. Or a book. Or a book about flowers. I mentioned 'obsessively researching', right?
Erik has been farming, well, since he can remember. He grew up on the main property, where our beef cows are, and has been operating agricultural and forestry enterprises from a young age. From what I can tell, few people work harder than a farmer, and Erik is no exception. He's spent a number of years working as a millwright, and is now pursuing his power engineering ticket. When he's not working, he's probably still working - either with the cattle, on fences or machinery, the house, or maybe my irrigation system. Erik also spends time volunteering with Eureka District Volunteer Fire Department. He's a pretty busy guy, and he cooks a mean lasagna.
